A free initiative is helping bushfire-affected small businesses survive and thrive by connecting them to business buddies with skills and resources to share.

Help a Small Biz is an online platform established to help the many small and micro businesses that have been directly or indirectly impacted by the bushfires across Australia get back on their feet by pairing them with businesses offering compatible goods, skills or services support.

corporate2community (C2C) founder Renae Hanvin developed the initiative to fill the gaps in current support for small and micro businesses.

International research from similar scale disasters state that forty per cent of small businesses don’t trade after a major disaster, with eighty per cent closed two years after.

That’s a disaster in itself.

While the many government grants and initiatives currently available to small businesses do a wonderful job and are providing unprecedented support to these businesses, we are still hearing of many who are falling through the funding gaps.

Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell said “Small businesses in bushfire, drought and flood-affected communities are facing enormous challenges to keep their doors open right now.

“Initiatives such as Help a Small Biz are helping to provide these small businesses with the additional support they need to get on with running their business.

Anthony Healy, NAB’s Chief Customer Officer today announced funding to support Help a Small Biz with their outreach to bushfire-affected communities as well as collaboration opportunities across the bank’s 30,000 strong workforce;

“SME’s are the backbone of the Australian economy and we know Australians want to help others in need – this is a fantastic opportunity for us to connect the skills of our people with small businesses looking to get back on their feet.  NAB is honoured to be partnering with Help a Small Biz to help bushfire-affected communities begin the road to recovery.”

Kristene Reynolds, Head of Communications at Cricket Australia has shared the skilled volunteering request to help across employees.

“We have so many talented team members in our office every day.  If some of them can spend an hour helping an impacted small business using these skills it’s a win-win for businesses big and small.”

Help a Small Biz is available to small businesses which have been impacted (directly or indirectly) by the recent bushfires.

Suitable businesses will then be paired with business “buddies’’ who will help address their needs so they can recommence trading and go on to thrive.
