How can you help the bushfire-impacted areas of Australia get back on their feet when you can’t even leave your house? That’s easy.

Help a Small Biz is a virtual volunteering program that matches the needs of small businesses with the capabilities of skilled professionals who want to donate their time to help.

There was an overwhelming feeling of generosity from Australians after the Black Summer bushfires and many unaffected people were wanting to help in any way they could, however it became difficult to support these towns when coronavirus forced the nation into lockdown.

As one of our helpers Julia Hunter puts it “Following the bushfires I was keen to do something to help regional businesses and towns to recover.”

Julia is a senior marketing, sustainability, tourism and governance professional who wanted to volunteer her time to help a small business get back up trading again.

But she wasn’t able to leave her house, let alone her home state of Victoria.

Through the power of technology and virtual meeting software, we were able to match her to Wine Knot Tours, a family-run Food & Wine Tour business that operates on the South Coast of New South Wales.

Wine Knot Tours were severely affected by the bushfires from late November right through until February as all of their bookings were cancelled due to road closures and the evacuation of the coastal areas.

They signed up to Help a Small Biz to ask for someone who could help them with marketing ideas for how to relaunch once venues open again post-lockdown.

“Help a Small Biz provided a connection between myself and a regional business that let me use my professional marketing skills to help the business build a plan that should hopefully see them grow and thrive,” Julia said after she helped Wine Knot with their marketing and business strategy.

Wine Knot Tours said they were “Extremely happy with the experience of working with Help a Small Biz,” and that they were “matched with the perfect person to get our business back on track after the bushfires and Covid”.
